The gunmen were reported to have had a free rein, shooting and detonating explosives. Unidentified gunmen have attacked the Mandawari Police station in Gwale local government area of Kano in the early hours of Monday morning.
A number of police officers are feared injured in the attack on the Police station, which is located around the palace of the Emir of Kano.
According to residents, the gun fire started at the break of dawn as the gunmen attacked the station.
The Joint Military Task force (JTF) in the state has cordoned off the area and searching for suspect.
However, the attacks are said to be spreading to other parts of the ancient town, as the gunfights are still ongoing between the militants and security operatives.
The city witnessed similar attack last Friday when Rijiyar’zaki police station was attacked by gunmen, leaving one dead.
Members of the fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram have staged similar attacks in the stated recent weeks, with the deadliest in January when almost 200lives were lost.
