The United Nations says it is worried about the civilian population in northern Syria and has drawn up emergency plans in case of a Turkish incursion into the region, according to the UN aid coordinator for Syria, Panos Moumtzis.
“We are hoping for the best but preparing for the worst,’’ he said in Geneva, warning that people could become displaced as a result of the operation.”
Moumtzis called on all actors in the conflict to respect international humanitarian law, which guarantees the protection of civilians during war.
Routes into north-eastern Syria must remain open so that the United Nations can keep supplying 700,000 of the 1.7 million people there with food and medicine, he demanded. (NAN)
