Police on Monday said five men were killed in a bar fire in India’s information technology hub Bangalore.

Deputy police commissioner MN Anucheth said the men, all employees of the Kailash Bar died in their sleep.

“The fire broke out at the bar in the KR market area around 2:30 am (21:00 GMT). The victims were sleeping in the ground floor of the building and were charred to death,’’ Anucheth said.

He said the fire had been doused and its cause was being investigated.

“Our forensic team is working with the fire department to see whether there were any lapses in fire safety measures at the bar,’’ he said.

The incident comes within two weeks of two separate fire accidents in Mumbai in which 19 people were killed, raising concerns over fire safety measures taken by pubs and restaurants in India’s rapidly growing cities. (dpa/NAN)
