After successfully hosting the Zone ‘B’ Preliminaries for the 2017 Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), the Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has qualified for the NUGA finals to be hosted by the Federal University of Technology, Makurdi, from 19th to 30th April, 2017.
KWASU athletes will participate in five games, including squash, badminton, table tennis, female volleyball and javelin (athletics).
Out of eleven universities expected to take part in the NUGA Preliminaries, the Institution played host to seven. These included Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State; Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife; Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti; and Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA). Others were University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Ilorin; Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba (AAUA), Ondo State, and Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osogbo.
The preliminaries featured 13 sporting events which took place between April 5 and 7, 2017.
The Chairman, Technical Committee for NUGA, Mr. Nick Igbokwe; the Chairman of the Zone and KWASU Director of Sports, Professor Mohammed Baba Gambari, and other Directors and Chairmen of Sports from the participating institutions were all present to ensure a hitch-free competition.
To demonstrate his support for the Games, the Vice-Chancellor of the host University, Professor AbdulRasheed Na’Allah, stunned the athletes with his appearance at the University Sports Arena, to watch the last football encounter between KWASU and UNIOSUN, which ended 1-0 in favour of the latter.
Professor Na’Allah commended all athletes and their coaches for their performance and demonstration of a high level of sportsmanship, which he said contributed greatly to the success of the Games.
On his part, the Director of Sports, Professor Mohammed Baba Gambari, congratulated all participating institutions for maintaining discipline throughout the sporting events, just as he commended the KWASU Management and other stakeholders for their contribution to the successful hosting of the Games.
