A Non-Governmental Organisation, Women of Purpose Development Foundation on Wednesday, provided free medical outreach to no fewer than 150 residents in Kukwaba community in FCT, to enhance their well-being.

Mrs Mabel Onwuemele, the founder of the group, said the medical outreach was aimed at bringing healthcare services closer to the people at the rural communities.

According to her, there is need for the government to do more in healthcare delivery at the rural areas as most communities in the country lack quality health services.

She said the medical outreach covered status check, vitamin A supplement, deworming, food demonstration, personal hygiene, and counselling to women of reproductive age in the area.

“The outreach is aimed to sensitise people of Kukwaba, especially the women on post natal care, infant and maternal mortality, the need to always know their status and get treatment to ensure healthy living.

“It is also a health awareness to sensitise the people to malaria prevention and personal hygiene and to counsel them on the need to always go for test before treatment.

“I had series of complications while giving birth and also had three major operations on one child; I would not want that to happen to any woman.

“A lot of women are dying during child birth, the infant and maternal rate in the country is too high and that is worrisome,” she said.

The founder expressed concern on the state of healthcare facilities at the rural areas in the country and called on the government for intervention.

“I think the government should do more by assisting the health sector and primary healthcare centre’s in the rural communities,” she said.

She also called on residents of the area to always dispose their waste properly to prevent the spread of communicable diseases and urged the environmental department to ensure regular evacuation of waste in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs Lami Kureh, thanked the foundation for bringing free health care services to the community and urged other organisations to emulate the gesture.
