The Osun House of Assembly has appealed to residents to dispose their waste properly to avoid health hazards, especially during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Mr Akinloye Oluseye, Chairman, House Committee on Environment, made the appeal in Osogbo on Friday after his committee’s meeting with all the critical players and departments under the state Ministry of Environment.
Oluseye said the environment was a critical section of human existence that should not be overlooked or neglected.
According to him, a clean environment creates and gives room for healthy living.
He said the Assembly had to summon those under the Ministry of Environment, Agencies and Departments to give stewardship of their services and to know which areas they needed help to sustain a clean, peaceful and productive environment.
Oluseye said the meeting was primarily a continuation of having a good, clean and sound environment, in tradition with the foundation laid by the immediate past state administration.
He, however, called on residents of the state and those returning for the festivities to help in keeping the environment clean by disposing their wastes properly and placing their refuse in designated places.
“People should not litter the environment with their refuse but dispose their wastes properly or place them at designated places where they will properly be disposed off by the state waste management officials.
“I am equally appealing to those that would be coming into the state for the Christmas celebration to pack their refuse and drop them at designated waste collection spots.
“Osun is a clean state and we intend to keep it as such. So we appeal to everyone to play his or her part in maintaining and sustaining a clean environment in order to live healthier lives,’’ he said
