These Deaths Too Many:Heaven Please! (A Poem)
By Wale Odunsi
They played for honour in the national team
They fought for peace, taking on guerrillas in the battlefield
They left indelible marks on the scene
They breathed life to our radio and TV screens
They rose from rags to riches
No story, No glory
They achieved hopes and dreams despite glitches
They kept alive the go-getter spirit
They re-defined dedication,with a complete hardwork kit
The day before we say ‘Hi’
Day after us at thegraveside saying ‘Bye-bye’
Low indistinct whisper of
‘Ashes to ashes’
Chorus of a dusty ‘Dust to dust’
With sober reflections of life and times
Pastor/Alfa preaching, memories replaying
Crowd watching, hearts shattering
Tears dropping, body shaking
Head banging, Panadol can’t cure this
No, not a thing
Day after day, Year after year,
We lose people that are so dear
Stroll in the distress chapter, engrossed in the fear
Of perchance your time is near
Am scared, Jeez am scared!
These deaths have left a big sore
Wipe your tears, cry no more
I plead: let it cease, let it cease
Are you there, can you hear?
Heaven please, Heaven please
A tribute to all departed nationalists, celebrities, sporting stars, fallen service men…plus our
relatives and friends.
