The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) says it has resolved to mark the Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day with various activities to showcase the country’s riches.

The NANS President, Mr Lucky Emonefe, said this at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday.

He said that association had would embark on a nationwide campaign to promote patriotism among students, who are the nation’s future leaders.

Emonefe emphasised the significance of Independence Day, recalling the struggles and sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers fought against colonialism.

He said while the country had made progress, a lot still needed to be done, adding that it is essential for citizens to rally behind their leaders.

Emonefe said many Nigerians took their independence and existence as one country for granted, forgetting the struggles of their grandfathers under colonialism.

He stressed that supporting leaders was essential even when there were disagreement with their policies.

According to him, to rekindle patriotism, NANS has plans various activities, including special prayers that will be held in mosques and churches across campuses.

He said: “We will pray for Nigeria’s prosperity and guidance for its leaders in line with our desire to bolster a sense of pride in our country.

“I am pleased to inform you that NANS, under my leadership, has planned a series of activities for our members to own their country and celebrate Nigeria in a grand way.” (NAN)
