The people of Ondo state are trooping out to vote for a governor today.From all accounts,it is a straight fight between incumbent Governor Mimiko , Labour Party candidate and Action Congress of Nigeria ,ACN candidate Akeredolu SAN.
Mimiko got a rare boost as reports said the family of late Gani Fawehinmi had endorsed him.But Akeredolu urged the people to vote for him and the ACN given his track record .
The Ondo election is seen as a major test of the political muscle of Bola Tinubu ,former governor of Lagos state who is viewed as the new godfather of south west politics.Can Tinubu’s ACN unseat the incumbent?
Oyo,Ogun, Ekiti and Osun have joined Lagos state in the ACN .Edo too is controlled by ACN now. Tinubu who is believed to have supported Mimiko to wrest power from PDP feels betrayed by the LP governor who has not only refused to join ACN but has also not shown enough gratitude .That is why Tinubu recently issued a red card to the incumbent during a recent campaign.
Whether ACN can truly unseat LP remains to be seen because the Ondo intrigues have generated interesting twists and turns.Even recent Pastor Tunde Bakare,running mate to General Buhari at the last polls reportedly endorsed LP’s Mimiko much to the chagrin of his party.
Meanwhile the police have beefed up security just as the military has reportedly given a shoot on sight order for anyone attempting to breach the peace.
