ICAN Holds Symposium On FG’s Budgets

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has scheduled the 2012 edition of its yearly Budget Symposium on the Nigerian Federal Government’s Budgets for Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at NICON Luxury, Tafawa Balewa Way, Garki, Abuja at 10:00 am. The symposium which will be declared open by the 48th President of the Institute, Mr. Adedoyin Idowu Owolabi would be reviewing and discussing the FGN’s Budgets from 2009-2011 with a view to appraising their implementations and recommending strategies for subsequent budgets.

The symposium will feature topics such as: Overview of Budgeting in Nigeria; Nigeria’s Revenue Profile, Cost of Governance and National Development; Impact of Successive Budgets on National Development; as well as Deficit Budgeting, Government Borrowing Costs, Fiscal and Monetary Stability.

A statement by Dayo Ajigbotosho ,assistant director, corporate affairs  of ICAN said seasoned professionals have been lined up to present papers on and discuss the aforementioned topics. They are: Mr. Bode Augusto of Augusto & Co, Lagos; Dr. Ayo Teriba of Economic Associates, Lagos; Dr. Olufemi Saibu of the Department of Economics, University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos; and Prof Mike Kwanashie, Department of Economics, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Expected at the symposium are Honourable Members of the National Assembly; Chief Executives of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and their Directors; Professional Accountants; Public and Private Sector Policy Makers as well as interested members of the public.

Last year’s edition of the Budget Symposium was held to review and discuss the FGN’s 2010 Budget with a view to appraising its strategies for national development and growth.

The Budget Symposium is one of the key activities of the Institute by which it makes useful contributions to the budgeting process and offer professional advice to the Federal Government in line with the Institute’s mandate.

Since its inception, about forty eight years ago by the Act of Parliament No. 15 of 1965, ICAN has been the premier professional Institute in Nigeria , producing world-class professionals, making remarkable contributions to the nation’s development through its strict maintenance of high standards and regulation
of the Accountancy Profession.   The Institute has also been rendering excellent services to various parts of the country through its forty seven districts across the states of the federation as well as in the United States of America and the United Kingdom. In line with the provisions of, the umbrella association for accountancy bodies all over the world, IFAC’s Statement of Membership Obligation (SMO), the Institute raises its standards from time to time.
