General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida,a former military President of Nigeria, has cautioned politicians against heating up the polity ahead of the 2015 elections.
The former President who was guest of honour, spoke at the presentation ceremony of two books titled: ‘Fasting according to Islamic Law’ and ‘Matsayin Azumi a Shari’ar Musulunci’ at the Murtala Square Kaduna today (Sunday).
Babangida, while commenting on the charged political atmosphere in the country now ,said politics was a game that produced winners and losers at the same time, not one in which all contestants would emerge victorious at the polls; so losers must learn to accept defeat with grace and prepare for another race someday.
“An overheated polity will produce nothing other than chaos and anarchy in our midst and I wish to advise politicians to be careful and responsible as they start their campaign train for 2015 contest. Nigerians deserve nothing less than the dividends of democracy that will guarantee minimum comfort for better, quality life. This is what is required to take the youths off the streets, restore the confidence of the disenchanted and provide succor to the poverty-stricken masses of this country. This is what is needed to check the menace of violence perpetrated by militants and Boko Haram insurgents,”he said.
He expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for the opportunity to attend the event which he described as an occasion that brought people together, saying the emergence of young writers like Dr. Aminu Ladan Sharehu was a welcome development that must be commended.
In his remarks on the occasion, the Emir of Zazzau,Alhaji Shehu Idris, expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for making the occasion possible and thanked dignitaries for having time to grace the occasion.
Author of the books who was the Director-General and Chief Executive of National Teachers’ Institute, Kaduna ,Dr. Aminu Ladan Sharehu, joined others around the world to call on the abductors of Chibok school girls to, as a matter of urgency, release them without further delay.
According to him,”Islam is a peaceful religion which does not condone the use of force especially on the aged, women and young children. Government should pursue the issue of release with caution so that no life is lost in the process. I pray Allah (SWT) will intervene to secure the release of the girls in good health and as soon as possible.
