Some farmers in Nasarawa State, have appealed to Gov. Abdullahi Sule to provide them with fertilisers and other farming inputs to boost food production and ensure food sufficiency in the state.

The farmers made the appeal on Wednesday in separate interviews with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Keffi, Nasarawa State.

They said timely provision of fertilizers would not only boost food production, but would also fight poverty and unemployment in the state, and the country at large.

Mr Maxwell Moses, appealed to the new administration to make the provision of fertiliser to farmers a top priority.

According to Moses, early distribution of fertiliser and farming inputs to farmers, will boost food production and reduce hunger and poverty in the land.

“We are now in July and no fertiliser has been made available to farmers by government; most of us are peasant farmers and we cannot afford the market price of fertiliser.

“That is why we always appeal to the government to provide us with fertiliser and other inputs at affordable price and on time.”

He also called on farmers and herdsmen to sheath their swords and pursue their businesses in a peaceful atmosphere considering the importance of peace to national development.

Another farmer, Malam Mohammed Audu on his part said boosting food production through the provision of fertliser at a subsidised rate to farmers, was also in the best interest of the government.

“Provision of fertiliser and other modern farming inputs to farmers will not only fight poverty, hunger and unemployment, but it will also improve on the revenue base of the country.

“It will improve on the standard of living of citizens; as well as ensure socio-economic development of the country,’’

Mr. Isaiah Gideon said late provision of fertiliser will affect agricultural productivity and called on the government to do the needful.

Gideon called for soft or interest free loans to farmers for improved agriculural yield.

“As we are all aware, no society can survive and live comfortably without agriculture.

“Agriculture is the main stay of every family and nation; and its importance cannot be overemphasised.’’ (NAN)
