Female players will for first time feature at the 8th Chuma Anosike Cup, a Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) official said on Friday in Abuja.

Charles Obasi, the NCF Regional Development Officer (RDO), South-East, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Obasi said the event scheduled for April 4 to April 8 would be hosted by the Government College, Owerri, with the five southeastern states in attendance.

“Chuma Anosike has added another big wig to the entire package with the inclusion of the female version. The two categories will take place simultaneously.

“All five states in the South-East are expected to feature in the male category; only Abia may not participate in the female category, making it the highest cricket event in the region,’’ he said.

Obasi added that the state was ready to host the tournament.

“A former commissioner for sports in Imo, Tony Ajaelu, has already confirmed that the state will provide the enabling environment for the players.

“The state will take care of the accommodation but the feeding will be subsidised for them by the organisers,’’ the cricket enthusiast said.

Imo are the defending champions of the annual South-East tournament. (NAN)
