At the end of the National Council of State meeting on Tuesday at the presidential villa,Nigeria’s capital, it became clear that discussion of the efforts to rescue the Chibok Schoolgirls was top on the day’s agenda.
Speaking to newsmen Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio said Nigeria’s security agents were on top of the situation. “We are very satisfied the security agents know very well where the girls are located and they are on top of situation”,Akpabio said.
On a rather optimistic note he said,“It was also heart-warming to note that the issue is not whether we can rescue the girls, but the issue is how we can rescue them in a way as to ensure their safety so that we don’t end up endangering their lives in the attempt to rescue them.
But Nigerians and activists all over the world want quick action as anxiety continues to mount over the fate of the missing girls.Are they being raped?Are they being tortured?What is their state of health?All manner of unconfirmed reports have continued to raise fears over the fate of the girls.
Over 200 Chibok girls were kidnapped by Boko Haram more than 80 days ago in Borno State,Nigeria.The #BringBackOurGirls campaign has kept the issue on the frontburner as the Abuja family has been holding daily sit out apparently much to the chagrin of government.Also the campaign received international boost as key figures like the US First Lady, Michele Obama and others have added their voices to the call to #BringBackOurGirls.Some international assistance came from the United States, United Kingdom and France among others towards ensuring the return of the girls.
The world waits with bated breath for the return of the Chibok girls.
At Tuesday’s meeting were some former heads of state namely Abdusalami Abubakar, Olusegun Obasanjo, Shehu Shagari, Yakubu Gowon, Ibrahim Babangida and Ernest Shonekan.But General Muhammadu Buhari was absent.
A notable presence at Tuesday’s meeting was the embattled governor of Adamawa State,Murtala Nyako who is facing impeachment proceedings against him back home
