(Updated)The relative peace in Kano City in the heart of northern Nigeria was on Wednesday shattered as suicide bombers attacked the Federal College of Education,FCE in Kabuga part of the city.
Reports said at least 15 students may have been killed in the bomb explosion believed to have been carried out by two suicide bombers.
It was further gathered that the suicide bombers came with some gunmen in tow to launch the attacks.At least 35 people were reported to have been injured.
This incident came after months of calm following a series of female suicide bomb attacks on Kano.Kano had also witnessed several attacks believed to have been earlier carried out by Boko Haram sect.
There has been no claim of responsibility for the latest attacks on the city.
Meanwhile, Police Headquarters in Abuja have confirmed that 15 people were killed in the explosion at FCE Kano.A statement by Ag.CP Emmanuel Ojukwu, Force Public Relations Officer,Force Headquarters, said,”Today 17/9/2014 at about 1530hrs, two armed men detonated Improvised Explosive devices at the lecture Hall of Federal College of Education, Zaria Road, Kano.
Giving further insight into the incident, the police said,“Thereafter, they began sporadic shooting outside the premises. Police team from a nearby Tactical Operations Point responded and shot dead the two (2) insurgents. Their AK 47 rifles were recovered.
Ojukwu added “On examination of the scene of the explosion, fifteen (15) dead bodies were recovered, while thirty-four (34) injured were taken to hospital for treatment.
“The Police has sealed the scene of crime and commenced investigation”, the statement said
Jonathan Commiserates ‘with Citizens and Residents of Kano’
Also,President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has commiserated with citizens and residents of Kano State on the loss of lives sustained today during the attack by terrorists on the Federal College of Education, Kano.
“President Jonathan’s sympathies and best wishes for a speedy recovery are also with all those who suffered injuries in the dastardly attack”Presidential spokesman,Reuben Abati said in a statement.
“The President commends the officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force who took prompt action to confront the attackers and minimize resultant casualties.
“He urges them to be even more alert and proactive in the future to stop terrorist attacks in Kano and other parts of the country.
“President Jonathan reassures the people of Kano and all Nigerians that the Federal Government continues to do all within its powers to further enhance the ability of the Police, Armed Forces and other security agencies to prosecute the war against terrorism to a successful conclusion and provide greater security of lives and property across the country”Abati said.
