An early morning fire at the Emir of Kaura-Namoda palace in Zamfara has claimed valuable historical artefacts dating over 300 years, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Confirming the incident, the state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Danjari Kwatarkwashi said the fire occurred in the early hours of Monday as a result of high voltage.
“You know, our palaces which are historical evidences and tourist attractions also house very precious and cherished artefacts that are part of the glorious pride of the nation.
“It is sad to note that three of the most valued artefacts that were affected by the fire included the flag signifying Islamic community.
“It was handed to the first Emir of Kaura-Namoda, Alhaji Muhammadu Namoda by Shehu Usman Danfodio in 1806 in Gada town of the present day Bungudu Local Government Area of the state.
“The other two items were the sword and spear which were handed over along with the flag and have all been under special care until this fire incident,” the commissioner said.
He stated that the items were of immense historical value that cannot be replaced.
“They also symbolize the state’s contribution to the 19th Century Sokoto Caliphate Jihad history.
“I have already visited the palace in Kaura-Namoda on behalf of the state government to ascertain the damage caused by the fire,” he said.
He further said that the Emir of Kaura-Namoda, Alhaji Ahmad Asha also lost some personal belongings to the inferno. (NAN)
