Scores of indigent persons on Saturday benefited from a free medical outreach organised by Mr Sunday Katung, a member Representing Zangon Kataf/Jaba Frederal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise witnessed massive turn out of aged men, women and children drawn from six stations within the Constituency.
People from Jaba, Daddu, Kamuru, Fadan Kantan, Zonkwa and Zango communities came out to receive medical care.
The beneficiaries were treated for various illnesses, received eye-care services and assisted with minor surgeries.
In an interview with newsmen during the exercise, Sunday Katung said the gesture was borne out of the need to serve humanity.
He said the exercise followed complaints, especially on health challenges of the people at the grassroots.
“Coming home, I get complaints from people with basic health challenges who are unable to go to the hospital,” he said.
Katung described the experience as humbling, considering the turnout.
“If nobody is touched by what we have seen, then we’ve lost our sense of humanity”.
He regretted that over the years, inadequate budgetry provision was being given to the health sector.
“A society where people are not healthy is bound to produce anarchy, and rebellion would certainly be the order of the day,” he said.
The legislator urged the federal government to accord to the health sector the same attention given to defence and security.
Dr Tot Dogo, Head of the medical team, told journalists in an interview that they were attending to patients with medical, surgical and opthalmological problems.
He said that each of the six stations carried out optical services, including prescriptions and distribution of medicated glasses.
Dogo said surgery was also carried out for people with appendicitis, hernia, goiter and fibroid.
“Only one referral case of cataract was recorded in one of the centres,” he said.
A cross-section of beneficiaries who spoke to NAN applauded the gesture of the legislator for alleviating their the burdens.
Earlier, Katung paid a courtesy visit to palace of the Kpop Ham, Mallam Danlami Gyet Maude, to condole with him over the death of the State Commissioner of Education, Prof. Andrew Nok.
The visit was also to seek royal blessing before the commencement of the medical outreach. (NAN)
