Ganduje to LG Chairmen: Step Up Efforts Toward Eradicating Polio

Kano state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has charged local government chairmen and health officials in the state to step up effort towards eradicating Poliomyelitis.

He said although there has been significant decline the in number of Polio cases recorded in Kano in recent times, all stakeholders must intensify effort especially as the onset of rainy season is the mostly likely time for spread of the disease.

The Governor made the call during a meeting of the Task Force Committee on Immunization and Polio eradication with local government and health officials at the Government House on Wednesday.

“We should ignore all our past achievements in this war and work towards total eradication of polio”, Dr. Ganduje maintained adding that he and his deputy would personally monitor the next round of the immunization exercise in Kano.

The governor expressed delight that district heads of the 44 local government areas in the state have personally monitored the immunization in the respective domains, lamenting however, that some local government chairmen are treating the exercise with levity, which he said the government would no longer tolerate.

Shedding light on the performance for April and plans for June, 2015 National Immunization Plus Days, NIPD, Dr. Nasiru Mahmud although the routine immunization exercise is recording success in the state, much needed to be done in terms of release of funds, logistics and political commitment from local government chairmen to achieve the set goals.

On his part, the representative of Kano Emirate Council on the state Task Force in Immunization, Sarkin Yakin Kano, Alhaji Wada Aliyu Gaya pledged continued commitment towards the success of the anti Polio war.
