Adamawa Fire Service says property worth N235.6 million were lost to fire disasters in the state in 2021.
Mr Adamu Abdullahi, the state Chief Fire Officer, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola on Friday.
He said that three lives were also lost to fire outbreaks during the period under review.
Abdullahi said that firefighters were able to save 10 lives and property worth N433.1 million in rescue operations.
He said the fire outbreak mostly happened during harmattan period as the places were dry and it was windy.
“During this period, we record fire incidents because everything dried off.
“We are advising the general public to switch off all electrical appliances while closing for the day or going out to office and market to avoid electrical sparks,” he said.
Abdullahi also advised people to always avoid substandard products that might lead to fire outbreak.
He called on parents to sensitise their children against acts that might lead to fire disaster, and to have fire distinguishers in their homes and business places in case of any outbreak.
“If you can’t afford it, get a detergent in a gallon and make it foam to quench the fire, or get a wet blanket to put the fire off,” he said. (NAN)
