The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Akwa Ibom state, Mike Igini has revealed that only seven million Nigerians had so far registered for the 2019 general election.
Igini who made the revelation Wednesday while answering questions on a local radio program monitored in Uyo said,”less than seven million people have so far been registered for forth coming general elections”.
He said the Commission was doing enough in voter education but regretted that politicians were not doing much to mobilize the electorates to take part in the ongoing voters registration exercise.
“The politicians are not playing their role. On election days, politicians go about mobilizing the electorate even going from house to house urging voters to go out and vote but the same politicians do not see the wisdom of mobilizing people to come out and register to enable them have their Permanent Voters Card (PVC), which will qualify them to cast their votes during elections.
On election sequence, he said INEC was a creation of the law and that the Commission would operate by the laws.
“It may surprised you that we made a proposal for certain amendment in the electoral law but the amendment came two days to the elections of 2019. The amendment was not available but because we had an existing legislation, we went ahead with the election,” Igini said.
