Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, says the current war against terrorism in the country can only be won through the deployment of the required technology that is more sophisticated than those possessed by the terrorists.
Governor Amaechi said this today during the unveiling of the “Stop Kidnapping Campaign (SKC),” an initiative of the Rivers State Police Command at the Police Officers Mess in Port Harcourt.
Represented by his deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru, Governor Amaechi traced the rise in incidents of kidnapping in the country to the entrance of mobile phones to the Nigerian society, stressing that this made the act of demanding for ransom easy and safe for kidnappers, challenging the Police to devise new and better technology to out-maneuver the criminals in order to continue winning the war against them.
“With mobile phones came this crime of stealing human beings. The only way that we can fight this crime is electronics because it is an electronic crime. So you must devise a higher electronic device in order to fight this crime. It is not something we can do physically. You must be able to locate them using a higher technology,” he said.
The Governor also urged politicians to desist from the practice of arming youths with weapons to win elections as it encourages them to engage in crime after the polls, maintaining that “the society that you live in is very important and it is greater than your ambition. So it is very important that nobody under any circumstance should arm youths in order to win elections because sooner or later, elections would be over and those same guns that served the purpose of delivering you will one day turn against you”.
Chairman of the occasion, who is also the Chairman, Senate Committee on Defense (Army) and Senator representing Rivers East senatorial district, Senator George Sekibo, said the Police alone would never be able to curtail the activities of criminals in the society except with the support and cooperation of members of the public, calling on the public to take the issue of security very seriously and partner with the Police to stamp out kidnapping from the society.
In his address, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin, said the campaign is an effort of the State Police Command in taking policing above the present bar of arresting, investigating and prosecuting, to the point where the community is viewed as a vital tool for policing, adding that the campaign would be launched in Area Commands and respective Divisions with the aim of adequately informing the public on crime preventive activities so as to encourage citizens to file complaints with utmost trust.
The event, which climaxed with the unveiling of the campaign logo and10million signatures register, also featured paper presentations from the Command’s Officers in charge of Anti-kidnapping, Anti-Cult and Anti-Bomb.
