As the Seventh House of Representatives approaches its midterm point, the Speaker, Rt. Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has announced that a comprehensive review of the Legislative Agenda would be carried out.
The review, according to the Speaker, will help to determine how far the House has gone in the delivery of the aims and objectives of the agenda which was subscribed to by every member at the beginning of the assembly. The Legislative Agenda formed the bedrock of the policy direction of the House Seventh Assembly.
While welcoming the Project Director of Democratic Governance for Development Project, funded by the United Nations Development Programme [UNDP], Mr Mourtada Deme, the Speaker called for technical assistance for the review of the Legislative Agenda .According to him, projects funded by the UNDP had done a lot to support the growth of democracy in the country, adding that the House will be glad to receive further support as it gets set to review the Legislative Agenda.
“I urge you to continue in your efforts in strengthening democracy so that our people will benefit from dividends of democracy, particularly in our electoral reform process. Also, I urge you to collaborate with relevant Committees in the House so as to attain the MDG goals”,he said.
Speaker Tambuwal, who noted that the duties of the National Assembly in areas of oversight, public hearings on bills would be further enhanced with logistic support for UNDP, assured the Project Director that more bills would be passed to protect women and vulnerable members of the society.
Mr Deme had in his remark commended the leadership of the House for the passage of women friendly bills and urged the lawmakers to work towards the attainment of the MDG goals.
