The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Nasarawa State has warned corps members in the state to stay away from political gatherings to prevent dangers associated with politics.
Mr Jacob Unogwu, Acting Head, Press and Public Relation Unit of NYSC in the state gave the warning in a statement issued in Lafia on Monday.
The NYSC was reacting to the death of a corps member, Samuel Makene, who was allegedly stabbed to death at a political gathering in the state.
According to the statement, the NYSC state coordinator, Mrs Zainab Isah, got a text message from the Department of Security Service (DSS) about the death of a corps member, Samuel Makene and contacted NYSC Zonal Inspector, Akwanga who confirmed the incident.
“On getting this message, the Zonal Inspector was contacted and she said she was just informed by one of her staff on the incident.
“The state coordinator, management and the entire corps members have been thrown into mourning as a result of this unfortunate incidence.
“The state coordinator wants to use this opportunity to warn corps members to avoid all forms of political gatherings and association throughout the period of their service and remain completely apolitical,” he said.
She warned that corps members who go contrary to this instruction would be sanctioned according to the NYSC Bye Laws.
“NYSC Nasarawa is mourning and prays that God grants the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
“We are unhappy with what happened. Nobody is happy. Even the corps members are not happy.
“Their patriotic service to their fatherland is the only thing we want our corps member to focus on.
“Again, we want to use this opportunity to commiserate with the family of the deceased over this irreparable loss and we pray God gives them the strength and fortitude to move on,” Unogwu said.
