Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar on Monday said that traditional rulers and politicians were not enemies or competitors but partners in pursuing the progress and development of Nigeria.
The Sultan made the statement when the new Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II paid him a courtesy call in Sokoto on Monday.
Apparently referring to the development that trailed the appointment of the new Emir, the Sultan said that “politicians and the traditional rulers should avoid unnecessary acrimony and bickering, which is to the detriment of the people.
“Rather, we should team up to better the lives of the people, as we are all leaders who have been entrusted with various leadership roles.”
Observing that Nigerians were in dire need of the support and assistance of the leaders, Sultan Sa’ad added that “Leadership is crucial in Islam and it is a trust that we will account for before the Almighty Allah.”
While promising that traditional rulers would continue to conduct themselves as ordained by God, Abubakar urged Sanusi to be grateful to God for making him an Emir, saying, “God gives and takes leadership.”
The Sultan also pledged that the Sultanate Council would extend the same hands of friendship to Sanusi as it did to late Ado Bayero.
Earlier, HRH Sanusi told Abubakar that he was at the Sultanate to pay homage and respect in line with the tradition of Kano Emirate.
“I am also here to condole you over the demise of late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero and pray for the repose of his soul,” he said adding, “We must also commend the Sultan for his sterling leadership roles in Nigeria and abroad,” Sanusi, added.
