A popular maxim says it’s better to watch what leaders do; don’t be fooled by what they say.
That may be relevant to an unfolding story as former President Olusegun Obasanjo held an hour-long meeting with Senator Ahmed Makarfi, national caretaker chairman of PDP on Tuesday only to lampoon the party.
The meeting with Makarfi was held Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta in Ogun State.
Speaking with newsman after the meeting “I will never return to the PDP, just like a dog would never return to its vomit.”
He said heis no longer involved in partisan politics. However, he wants a strong party in government and a strong party in opposition to check impunity.
Read between the lines.Obasanjo may not be in partisan politics, but he remains an interested stakeholder. He knows his onions as well.
And,Nigeria’s recent past history shows that Obasanjo has a way of allowing his body language to tell where he unofficially belongs.
After dumping PDP before the 2015 elections, he refused to join APC. But it is an open secret that his actions before and after the elections were pro-APC presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari who eventually won.
As the race for 2019 gains momentum, it is clear, which party OBJ belongs to may be immaterial. It is which party he throws his weight behind that matters.
