The International Republican Institute (IRI) in collaboration with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) says it will establish political party resource centres in four states in Nigeria to build capacity of politicians.

The Resident Programme Officer of IRI in Nigeria, Madam Husna Hassan, made the disclosure on Wednesday in Yola at a workshop for representatives of political parti in Adamawa.

Hassan, who did not specify when the project will be a reality, said the centres would be established in Adamawa, Bauchi, Sokoto and Ebonyi, adding that it would be supported by USAID for three years.

She said that the training for politicians, particularly of parties who have elected representatives, was to enhance their capacity toward quality representation.

“We are going to open political party resource centres in the states, to see that parties get more capacity building, “ he said.

Hassan explained that IRI would also build linkages with communities so that citizens could identify their political parties.

The resident programme officer said the planned project would also involve building citizens’ engagement and communication, for politicians to understand how to engage with citizens with a view to bringing them on board.

The Adamawa Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Organising Secretary, Alhaji Hamza Bello and Youth Leader, Mr Hamidu Sajoh, commended the two organisations for the proposed programme.

The two officials said the centres, when operational, would go a long way in building political parties and politicians to live up to their responsibilities to the electorate. (NAN)
