President Goodluck Jonathan has spoken openly on insinuations about a looming Interim National Government following crisis over election in Nigeria.
Speaking before Catholic Bishops in Abuja on Sunday , Jonathan said insinuations about interim government was treasonable.
He said there was no way he, a president popularly elected would head an interim government. He said, amazingly , that the only interim government possible is a military regime.
But Jonathan also said further that even West Africa will not accept military regime. The African Union as well as the UN will not accept a military regime. He therefore proceeded to describe interim government as treasonable.
It could be recalled that Attorney General of the Federation ,Mohammed Adoke dismissed calls for interim government.
Presidential Spokesman ,Reuben Abati shocked the nation with a statement when he said former President Olusegun Obasanjo was plotting for an interim government “he hopes to head”.
Obasanjo’s most dramatic response was to angrily quit the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP by ordering his membership card to be torn openly in Abeokuta.
Despite President Jonathan’s remarks on Sunday, sources told Newsdiaryonline that the powers angling for interim government also include some of those serving in Jonathan ‘s administration. No names have been given yet.
“These people who fear they may become irrelevant after this regime are behind the push for interim government .And the movers of the interim government idea include some people within and outside the administration” one highly informed source told Newsdiaryonline.
These revelations are unfurling as Nigerians are gripped by election fever .Will it or will it not hold? President Jonathan assured Sunday that elections will be conducted as scheduled by INEC.
But even the INEC Chairman ,Professor Attahiru Jega told the Senate last week he could not guarantee that the polls will hold as scheduled because the contentious issues of security were beyond the control of his commission.
Majority of Nigerian hope elections are held as rescheduled to avert a constitutional crisis.
