The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA Professor Adebiyi Daramola has reiterated the importance of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme, SIWES to the career choice and development of the students who partake in it. He stated this while addressing the 400 level students of the institution embarking on the six month mandatory industrial training for the 2016/2017 session. Daramola said, “SIWES is a Federal government programme which aims at synchronizing the theoretical training received by students in their respective institutions with the practical experience of working in real life situation. It is aimed at adding value to the training of students with the ultimate goal of producing competent indigenous manpower to drive the industries and our economy. I therefore urge you to see this scheme as critical to your career development.”
Professor Daramola also called on the students to create good impressions of themselves, their families and the university by being of good moral conduct. “Character is germane to ones future. Therefore ensure you behave well. Handle your assigned duties with the fear of God and be good ambassadors of your families and this great university. We have testimonies in the past of organisations recruiting our products because of their comportment during their industrial training. Some still wish to take more from FUTA. I admonish you to vigorously pursue knowledge and skills that will place you ahead of others.”
He assured the students of management’s support during the training and challenged them to bring back outstanding performance and report which the University is noted for.
Speaking in the same vein, the Area Manager, Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Akure Area Office, Dipeolu Gloria charged the students to take advantage of the training to acquire skills and methods of work that are not available in their institution. He also urged them to be well behaved. “Comport yourselves decently in your work places, obey constituted authorities and observe the safety measures in the organisations you find yourselves.”.
Speaking earlier, Director, Industrial Training Unit, FUTA, Professor Zacchaeus Opafunso stressed the importance of the training to the students’ academics and future. He encouraged them to be of good conduct and put in their best wherever they find themselves.
