There was drama at the Security and Exchange Commission headquarters in Abuja today when members and staff of the capital market commission stood guard at the exits to prevent embattled Director-General of the commission, Ms. Arunma Oteh from gaining access into the building.
Oteh was expected to resume back to the office today after being sent on compulsory leave on Monday, June 11, 2012.
The embattled D.G was ordered to proceed on a compulsory leave by the commission’s board in other to be able to probe the allegations of financial misappropriation and disharmony in the capital market commission towards her.
It will be recalled that the board had named Daisy Ekineh, one of the Executive Commissioners of SEC to act as Director-General in the absence of Oteh.
The protest was staged due to information staff said they gathered that the Finance Ministry, headed by Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala planned to reinstate Oteh.
Activities were suspended for more than one hour and despite the rain many of the protesters sang anti-Oteh’s song with different placards to show their disagreement over her purported resumption.
It took the intervention of the acting Director-General before action was suspended.
However, staff union leaders went into a closed door meeting with the management of the commission.
