The appointment of Funso Doherty as new Director General of PenCom by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has generated some disquiet,Newsdiaryonline has learnt. With the appointment, the acting president has reversed Buhari’s appointment of Dikko Aliyu Abdulrahman as CEO, announced earlier.
Reacting to the development, the Textile Labour Union Monday, the development ”will further lead to crisis of confidence in the leadership of PenCom”
In its statement to mark Democracy Day,the Textile Workers’ union leaders,John Adaji, President and Issa Aremu, mni, General Secretary urged the federal government to respect due process.
The union said “As an affiliate of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and a critical stakeholder in the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), we are concerned with recent developments in the pension industry.
“The Labour market Institution like the National Pension Commission is a specialized field that should not be a place for political appointees.
“We acknowledge the sensitivity of the Acting President to address the controversy following the abrupt termination of the appointment of the former Director General of PenCom, Mrs. Chinelo Amohu-Amazu. However the recent appointment of Funso Doherty by the Acting President as the replacement of Dikko Aliyu Abdulrahman will further lead to crisis of confidence in the leadership of PenCom. The best way is for the Federal Government to return to due process by recalling the former Director General Mrs. Chinelo Anohu-Amazu to complete her tenure in accordance with the Pension Reform Act 2014.
Even before the unions spoke,Newsdiaryonline had learnt that the reversal of Buhari’s appointnment of Dikko by Osinbajo has ruffled feathers. Those who spoke with Newsdiaryonline wondered why Osinbajo reversed appointment of Dikko while he was waiting for confirmation by the Senate.
Some said it may be an indication of a new era in the Presidency. But one insider said “everybody is just taking advantage of Buhari knowing full well that even if Buhari comes back, he will not do anything about it.”
