#TrackNigeria: A Coalition of FCT Indigenous Group has called on the Federal Government to adequately set up policies that would guarantee women’s right to affirmative action to encourage women participation in politics in the country.
Miss Serah Tukurah, an Abuja Indigenous advocate and official of the Group, in an interview with News men on Saturday called on the FG to address discrimination against women in the country.
According to her, adequate implementation of 35 per cent affirmative action for women would foster positive governance in the country.
“Women have been left behind, treated as second class citizens and during elections they come out with their kids to vote after which they are not found in the cabinet.
“I call on Mr President to have more women inclusiveness in the cabinet to record adequate progress in governance in the country. The government should also set up policies that would guarantee women’s right to affirmative action to encourage women participation in politics in the country,” she said.
The advocate maintained that the resistance to women based affirmative action has remained the enabling tool for perpetuation of discrimination against women in the country.
However, she called on the Government to also consider the appointment of an Abuja native in the Federal Executive Council, (FEC) for peaceful coexistence in the country.
“Over time decisions are taken at the FEC meeting and their is no representative of an FCT indigene to represent the people like every other state does.
“We don’t find it funny that we belong to this part of the country that does not recognise us as a people.
“I call on the government to appoint an indigene as Minister of FCT, a person that is familiar with the terrain and knows what the people really want,” she appealed.
