President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians, the diplomatic community and foreign observers of full protection during the general elections.
Buhari who gave the assurance in a broadcast Thursday also distance the Federal government from threats of intimation of diplomats and foreign observers.
Buhari’s words: “I want to assure all Nigerians, the diplomatic community and all foreign election observers of their safety and full protection. Any comments or threats of intimidation from any source do not represent the position of the Federal Government of Nigeria.”
Addressing Nigerians, the president added “As Government has a critical role in maintaining the democratic traditions, so do citizens. I therefore urge you all, as good Nigerians, to take a personal interest in promoting and maintaining peace in your respective neighbourhoods during the elections. This is certainly not a time to allow personal, religious, sectional or party interests to drive us to desperation.”
Newsdiaryonline recalls that a recent comment by Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai alluding to “bodybags” that may come on the heels of any foreign intervention has drawn wide criticisms.
El-Rufai’s aide Samuel Aruwan explained that the governor did not threaten to use violence against anybody.Instead, he said it was a patriotic comment.
The European Union,EU said it was reviewing security plans for observers. Also, the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, W. Stuart Symington said those who utter dangerous words would be held to account.
Buhari’s broadcast will hopefully allay fears within diplomatic circles ahead of the elections.
