The winners of the just-concluded ASO Table Tennis Championship in the cadet and junior categories are to be awarded scholarships up to the university level, says Olusegun Ajuwon, Chairman, Aso Table Tennis Club.
Ajuwon said in Abuja that four players in the cadet and another four from the junior
categories would benefit from the scholarships.
According to him, the best eight of the cadet and junior players would get scholarships up to the university level as an encouragement from the club.
“We want our young players to combine playing table tennis with education, and I think the scholarships will go a long way to encourage them,’’ he said.
Ajuwon said athletes discovered at the 13th edition of the championship would be handed over to the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation
(NTTF) for grooming and exposure to mandatory competitions.
“I am happy that the President of NTTF is here to watch the game, and the national coach has been with us since the commencement of this championship and I know they will do the needful.
“Our major problem is lack of sponsorship for the championship and what we have decided is to hold a special fund raising for the 14th edition, and we hope to raise enough funds.
“We are appealing to sports loving individuals to support the championship.
“We will also talk to corporate bodies for sponsorship. We are going to be more aggressive in looking for sponsors for the next edition beginning from now,’’ he said. (NAN)
