President of the Senate ,Senator David Mark has expressed sympathy with the victims of the unabating flood ravaging communities in Benue State just as he pleaded with the federal government to intervene in the disaster and save lives.
Senator Mark made the call when he along with the Benue State Governor Gabriel Suawam inspected the flood ravaged communities as well as the resettlement camps where some of the surviving victims are taking refuge . He added that the predicament of the victims requires urgent attention.
He said the situation is very disturbing lamenting” nobody anticipated this but this is a bad natural disaster. We ideally need the rains but this is not the volume of rain we desire.
“I share in your pains . We can only ask you to be patient until the rains begin to recede. This is beyond the state government. I therefore request the federal government to come to the aide of the state government”.
Senator Mark urged Nigerians to take precautionary measures against the strange water that have visited parts of Nigeria this rainy season.
He commended the state government and the medical team that have been rendering assistance to the victims of the flood disaster even as he cautioned the people to maintain high level of hygiene in the camps.
Senator Mark therefore donated the sum of N4million to enable the victims purchase drugs and foodstuff.
Conducting the Senate President round some of the flooded communities, Governor Suswam thanked him for the visit and urged the federal government to help the state out of the crisis.
Suswam added that the state has provided four resettlement camps accommodating no fewer than 5000 victims who have lost their houses and means of livelihood to the strange flood.
Senate president was accompanied by the Chairman, Senate committee on National Planning Senator Barnabas Gemade and the Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro.
