The Defence Headquarters Abuja (DHQ) says the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) has achieved substantial progress in ongoing counterinsurgency operations, as troops neutralized terrorists, arrested  262 and rescued 147 kidnapped hostages.

According to the Director, Defence Media Operations (DDMO), Maj-Gen Edward Buba,”Troops neutralized 187 militants and arrested 262 suspects in the last week alone. The operations, spanning the country, also led to the rescue of 147 kidnapped hostages, highlighting the military’s intensified efforts against terrorism and organized crime.

“In addition to disrupting terror networks, troops arrested 39 individuals involved in large-scale oil theft in the Niger Delta. The arrests are expected to deter illegal oil activities that have cost the nation billions. Officials estimate that the oil theft prevented during the operations could have amounted to over N1.25 billion.”

Gen. Buba noted that the military operations extended across Nigeria’s northern and southern regions, reflecting a multi-pronged approach to tackling various forms of insurgency and criminal activity.

“Notably, troops in the Northwest captured Abubakar Bawa Ibrahim, also known as Habu Dogo, a high-profile terrorist leader on the watchlists of both Nigeria and Niger due to his cross-border criminal activities.

“In a coordinated effort in the Southeast, the Nigerian military arrested seven members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). Among those apprehended were key operatives, including Dr. Nnamdi Chukwudoze and Chigozie Ezetoha, also known as “Chapet,” apprehended in Ihiala, Anambra State.

“The military reported the recovery of an extensive cache of weapons and ammunition, including 205 firearms and 5,241 rounds of various ammunition. The confiscated items included AK-47 rifles, locally made pistols, and other arms essential to criminal networks. Additional equipment, such as radios, vehicles, and motorcycles used by militants, was also seized,” he stated.

He added,”Troops in the Niger Delta destroyed 98 illegal oil refining sites and confiscated more than a million liters of stolen crude and refined oil.

“The dismantling of these operations is anticipated to hinder oil theft networks that contribute to the nation’s economic losses.”

He assured that the military remains committed to sustaining these efforts to bring stability and security to Nigeria. “The terrorists are left with no choice but to surrender or be killed on the battlefield,” he stated, reinforcing the military’s resolve.

“These recent actions, along with ongoing operations, underscore the Nigerian Armed Forces’ dedication to neutralizing threats across the country and restoring safety for its citizens,” Gen. Buba stressed.
