Senate Adjourns Sitting In Honour Of Chukwumerije

Uche-ChukwumerijeThe Senate on Tuesday adjourned sitting to honour its chairman of Committee on Education ,Senator Uche Chukwumerije  who died last weekend in a Turkish Hospital in Abuja at the age of 76.

After the Senate President ,Senator David Mark officially announced the death of the Senator at the plenary, Senate leader Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba through a motion urged  the Senator to observe a minute’s  silence in honour of Senator  Chukwumerije.

The motion was seconded by Senator Ahmed Lawal. “In keeping with the tradition of the Senate, I asked that we observed a minute of silent in respect of our late colleague Senator Uche Chukwumerije” Ndoma-Egba said.

In another motion, the Senate leader also asked the upper chamber of the National Assembly to adjoin sitting to Wednesday April 22nd as a mark of honour to the late  Senator. The second motion was also seconded by Senator Ahmed Lawal.

When Senate President put the motion to vote, it was unanimously supported by all Senators who were present at the plenary. A condolence register has been open at the lobby of National Assembly for the late Senator.

Senator Chukwumerije would be remembered  by his colleagues  for  his traditional white dress and his interventions during the several strike actions embarked on by Academic Staff Union of University ,ASUU as Chairman, Senate committee on Education. His contributions on the floor were  well thought out, researched and thought provoking.
