The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) received with shock the ugly news of plane crash at the Iju, Ishaga/Agbado area of Lagos involving Dana aircraft on Sunday, June 3rd, 2012 in which all the 154 passengers and crew members were feared dead and that of Allied airline cargo plane boeing 727 that crashed at the Accra airport where 10 persons died after colliding with a van.

The Dana aircraft crashed in the thickly populated area where residential buildings housing people and property were crushed to death and destroyed. Although, no official reason for the crash has been established, CLO learns that cutting corners by the operators of the system and inefficient government that care less about the lives and welfare of the citizens were responsible for the mishap.

CLO regrets these monumental losses in human and material resources in the crash. We sympathise with the families of the victims as well as the collapsing system that we run which we hold primarily responsible for this preventable shameful acts.

While awaiting the official reports on the crash, CLO calls on the Federal government to undertake both very urgent and serious measures that will ensure the resolve of the intractable crisis in the Aviation sector in Nigeria that has caused the huge loss of human lives and material resources.

The major responsibilities of every government are and should be the security of lives and property of the citizens.  May the Almighty God grants us all the fortitude to bear these irreparable losses and grant the souls of the departed eternal rest.

Signed

Ibuchukwu Ohabuenyi Ezike,

Executive Director.
