The peaceful conclusion of Saturday election in Osun has once again confirmed that given a conducive atmosphere INEC can discharge its Constitutional duties creditably without let and hindrance,the Voters Assembly has said.
President ,Nigeria Voters Assembly, (VOTAS) Comrade Mashood Erubami said Sunday specifically that “INEC with the Osun election has sent strong message to Nigerians that it could be trusted having been tested with two consecutive election so far. INEC should however guide its loins by ensuring that it does not allow a back slide in its operations and must continue to improve in the areas of adherence to its own guidelines , Electoral Act and the constitution.
“It must endeavour to publish the contact addresses of polling centres, names and contact phone numbers of their adhoc and pamanent staffs in National newspapers and on its Website.
“INEC should continue to benefit from inter Agencies cooperation which has helped it, in no small way to protect lives and properties during election and ensures that there is peace and tranquillity during elections.
According to him,“The confidence of Nigerians have been rekindled and boosted with the. Improvement recorded by INEC in Osun in terms of overcoming the usual logistic and transportation challenges which in the past has resulted in late arrival of officials and voting materials is noteworthy that against the doubt of sceptics, INEC delivered to most polling boots, in timely fashion, adequate voting materials and necessary forms for vote collation and result declaration, if these trend continues, it will reinforce peoples confidence that INEC can conduct better election that will make joy appear on the faces of Nigerians come 2015.
The Voters Assembly also commended the Security Agencies even though their massive deployment seems to make the election look like one at gun point, still, their civility during the election, their mobility and use of initiative coupled with their responsiveness which culminated in making the election very peaceful are commendably noted, as nobody died or was killed either due to error of omission or commission for the period the election lasted .
In this regards, the security agencies should continue to discharge their duties of protecting election materials, policing the voting Centres and Human Rights of Voters in any election to which they are invited creditably and in accordance with the law.
The voters Assembly also congratulated the brave Osun electorate for coming out enmasse to cast their votes orderly and peacefully for their preferred candidates, disregarding the intimidating security enviroment and the reported unwarranted harassment unleashed on some party leaders and Students,. Th. Peaceful result in the end has however justified that the end justify the means,Erubami said.
