The peace agreement recently signed between the warring communities in southern Taraba State, especially around the Wukari-Ibi axis of the state, appears to have collapsed, as hostilities resumed Thursday morning in Ibi town.
Already a 24- hour curfew has been imposed on Ibi, with soldiers and other anti-riot police patrolling to restore peace and order.
As at the last count, 11 people have been killed and several houses burnt in Ibi. This is even as heavy fighting and shooting were said to still be going on in the town and neighbouring environs.
Confirming the situation, the Chairman of Ibi local government council,Isiyaka Adamu said that at least 11 people had been killed in Ibi, as at the time of filing this report.
‘’ For now 11 people were killed while several others sustained injuries of bullet wounds, We are now planning to transfer those with serious degree of injuries to the state capital,’’ he said.
The state acting governor Garba Umar was yet to make any official statement on the latest violence that broke out in the state.
However, the police command in the state through its spokesman, Joseph Kwaji, has since confirmed the incident, but failed to give details of the violence as at press time.
He said already 14 persons were arrested in connection with the crisis, as 2 AK47 riffles were recovered.
According to him, the latest crisis was precipitated by the shooting of a Hausa man, allegedly by some Jukun natives, along Wukari road.
