The Enugu Police Command has enlisted the support of parents especially mothers to check the increasing involvement of females in cultism.

The command equally urged faith-based organisations and youth groups to help in checking the scourge among the girl-child in the society.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Enugu.

Amaraizu said that involvement of females in cult activities greatly spelled doom for the future of the country’s youth population and society.

He noted that most cult groups in the state drew members from students of secondary schools, primary school pupils, artisans such as hair dressers and traders, comprising both the male and female.

According to him, regrettably, these girls and youths do not even know why they should be members of cult groups just as some are coerced to join either through peer influence or fake assurances of becoming famous, powerful and protected.

“We must join hands with the Inspector-General of Police as well as the Enugu Police command to see that cultism in all its ramifications is checked not only in Enugu State but the country in general.

“Parents, faith-based organisations and youth groups are critical stakeholders in this fight against the scourge of cultism in the country,’’ he said.

Amaraizu described cultists as deviants and  vandals, and time bombs in our various communities, who need to be confronted headlong by all well-meaning Nigerians.

“Many youths that would have contributed their quota positively to the development of the society or state have had their lives cut short, while some are critically injured and maimed due to cultism.

“Cultism induced violence as means of settling scores is gradually adversely affecting the fabrics of our society,’’ he said. (NAN)
