Heavily armed counter-terrorism police took a man into custody on Friday during a raid near an Anglican church in Melbourne, local media reported.

“Police with sub-machine guns forced a man to lie on the footpath near St Mary’s Anglican Church in North Melbourne around 1:30 pm (0330 GMT),’’ the national broadcaster ABC reported.

He was then dressed by officers in a white plastic suit before being placed in a police van.

Officers also raided a nearby apartment and were seen removing several objects.

Victorian police told the ABC there was no current or impending threat to the community.

The Australian Federal Police confirmed the Joint Counter Terrorism Team was conducting “operational activity” in the area, but did not elaborate. (dpa/NAN)
