The Federal and Jigawa Governments say they are spending N81.58 million on feeding 74,685 primary school pupils in Hadejia Local Government Area of the state under the School Feeding Programme.
The council’s Social Investment Programme’s Coordinator, Alhaji Husseini Abubakar, made the disclosure in Hadejia on Wednesday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He said while the Federal Government spends N66.12 million monthly on the programme, the state spends N15.46 million.
According to Abubakar, 41,067 of the pupils are in class one to three, while 33, 618 pupils are in class four to six.
“The state government graciously enrolled 33,618 class four to six pupils in addition to the 41,076 class one to three pupils already captured by the Federal Government for the programme.
“Consequently, it added N20 to the N70 budgeted by the Federal Government per meal for each pupil so that all the classes can now benefit from the programme.
“The idea is to give the class four to six pupils a sense of belonging and to save them from the temptation of wanting to snatch the meals from their younger ones,” he said.
The coordinator said that 420 cooks were employed by both the state and Federal Governments to prepare the students’ meals.
He cautioned the cooks against unhygienic practices during cooking and serving of the meals, warning that any cook found wanting would be sanctioned. (NAN)
