SEMA, UNICEF hold workshop on nutrition in emergencies

#TrackNigeria: The Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) with support of United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), on Wednesday began a 2-day workshop  focused on developing plan to ensure access to nutrition for women and children during emergencies.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop was tagged, `Emergency Preparedness Planning and Response Plan.’

The Executive Secretary of the Agency, Mr Ben Kure, said it was important to plan access to nutrition for women and children during emergencies, because they are the most affected.

Kure stressed that being in displaced camps in no way takes away the rights of women and children to nutrition and education.

“It should not be denied,” the executive secretary, represented by Mr Abubakar Ibrahim, Director, Admin and Finance of the Agency, said.

He explained that the workshop was to acquaint stakeholders on adequate response on emergencies, to structure strategies to cover health and nutrition of most vulnerable groups.

Chinwe Ezeife, Nutrition Specialist, UNICEF Kaduna Field Office, said humanitarian crisis are on the rise with adverse effect on vulnerable groups of women and children facing deprivation.

She said that the workshop is to update on the level of nutritional emergency response plan to meet identified challenges.

“When the nutritional values of children are not met the survival of the child or mother it at risk.”

Adole Inalegwu, Assistant Director, Focal Officer for UNICEF, said the objective of the workshop was to reduce and protect nutritional status of most vulnerable children pregnant and lactating women.

He said emergency agencies need to provide and restore access to health, water supply and education adding that nutrition, education should continue as basic rights of children.

He assured that UNICEF would continue to sensitise agencies to ensure that nutrition of children are being catered for.

NAN reports that the event had in attendance officials of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Kaduna State Fire Service, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Police , NGOs and Federal Road Safety Corps, among others. (NAN)
