Team Anambra on Monday won gold in the single female Scrabble and triple jump events at the ongoing 8th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta.

Team Anambra on Monday won gold in the single female Scrabble and triple jump events at the ongoing 8th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta.

The state now has a total of five gold, five silver and six bronze to bring the total medal haul to 16.

Victoria Chukwuemeka won gold in the female scrabble singles while Adaeze Eze won gold in the long jump female event.

Other gold winners were Chibuikem Oranye (Taekwondo individual Poomsae- Male), Rosemary Nwankwo (100m Female) and Chioma Edeh (800m Female)

Team Anambra Cricket male team won silver in the day one, Chibuikem Oranye and Favour Nwakaeze won silver in (Taekwondo-Team Poomsae) while Chizitere Oguegbe also came second in 100m to win silver in swimming backstroke female.

Other silver winners include Divine Egede in -35kg Kyorugi Female Taekwondo while the trio of Onyinye Nnemkwo, Chimamanda Chukwuemeka and Catherine Ubammayie won in the Scrabble female team event.

Anambra also finished third to win bronze in Table Tennis mixed doubles with Chisom Nnamani and Chukwugoziem Ezeofor while Goodluck Njoku won in Karate -50kg male.

Favour Nwakaeze again won in Taekwondo Female Individual Poomsae and -47kg Kyorugi Female while Excel Ocheke grabbed bronze in Gymnastics Vault- male and Favour Obiefuna got bronze in high jump female.

In his reaction, Patrick-Estate Onyedum, Chairman of Anambra Sports Development Commission, said he was particularly happy that the state featured an age limit-compliant side.

Onyedum, who commended the youthful athletes, said that about 99 per cent of the team members passed their screening.

He called for more transparency on the part of officials, especially in events that are technical while expressing confidence that more laurels would come to the state.

Meanwhile, Mrs Nonye Soludo, wife of Gov. Chukwuma Soludo has urged the team to continue to show resilience in every task in line with the Anambra spirit of can-do.

She said that the team was poised not only to outdo their performance at the previous edition, but to finish as one of the most successful teams in the game.

The wife of the governor promised a lavish reception for the team when they return to Awka at the end of the games. (NAN)
