The Yobe Government on Thursday in Damaturu inaugurated a 26-man Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee that would work for peaceful coexistence in the state.

Mallam Baba Wali, Secretary to the State Government, said the committee was charged with the responsibility of resolving crises involving farmer and herders, communal clashes and marriage disputes, among other forms of conflicts.

He said membership of the committee, known as Zauren Sulhu, was drawn from religious and community leaders, security and law enforcement agencies.

According to him, part of the objective is to ensure necessary measures are taken to prevent vices that have negative consequences on the lives of the youth and children in the state.

Wali said through seminars and workshops, the committee would undertake the sensitisation and enlightenment of the public on their civic responsibilities.

He also said the committee was to ensure the establishment and takeoff of the alternative dispute committees in all the 17 local government areas (LGAs) and 174 wards of the state.

“The committee will monitor and receive periodic reports on the activities of LGA and ward committees and undertake sensitisation and enlightenment of members of the public on their civic responsibilities.

“They will also take necessary measures that will forestall vices that have negative consequences on the lives of the youth and children, such as the use of illicit drugs.

“It will serve as an avenue of reaching the government from the grassroots, as well educating the general public about the activities of the government and soliciting for their support and cooperation on behalf of the government,” he said.

Wali said the committee would also liaise with all the state and federal organisations operating inYobe. (NAN)
