The Senate Committee on Education has given the management of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, a pass mark for living up to its responsibilities of promoting academic excellence and nurturing a new generation of technologically savvy young Nigerians through its well-grounded academic programmes.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Education, Senator Uche Chuckwumerije who was represented by Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, stated this during a working visit to the institution as part of its oversight function. The Committee, which included Senator Emmanuel Agwariavwodo and the clerk Mr. Felix Orumwense, was also very proud of the numerous national and international achievements and honours garnered by the institution saying “FUTA is a pride to Ondo State and Nigeria”.
Senator Bagudu speaking on behalf of the team shortly after the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Prof. Adedayo Fasakin presented an overview of the University, its achievements, challenges and future projections, expressed satisfaction with the institution’s achievements in upholding the standard of education in the country and for living up to its motto of technology for self-reliance. The management also used the occasion to call for allocation of more funds to the University to solve some pressing problems in order to enhance its delivery on its mandate of teaching, research and community development.
Senator Bagudu, who acknowledged the numerous challenges facing education in Nigeria, commended FUTA for its giant strides and said the University should be supported for it to do more for its stakeholders. Senator Bagudu said that better education in Nigeria had become imperative for national development and he promised that the Committee will continue to support the University in efforts aimed at improving the quality of education in the country. Senator Agwariavwodo on his part commended the University for contributing to the improvement of agricultural practices in Nigeria through its various initiatives.
The Committee was also impressed by measures taken by the University to implement agreement reached between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) after the last strike in which the Senate Committee on Education played a prominent role to resolve. The committee also praised FUTA management for the institution’s clean and homely environment which it described as very conducive for teaching and learning. Mr. Peter Akindele, Acting Bursar, Dr. Femi Oguntuase, Librarian, Deans and key officials later took a tour of facilities and ongoing projects on the campus. At the end of the guided tour, Senator Bagudu expressed satisfaction with the University’s performance.
