A former Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Peter Okebukola, has advised the Federal Government to prioritise infrastructure investments to reduce dependence on foreign countries.
Okebukola gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Ota, Ogun.
According to him, inadequate investments in infrastructure have become a significant challenge in the country and contribute to low inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country.
Okebukola noted that poor infrastructure could hinder development and economic growth, thereby keeping Nigeria dependent on foreign expertise and technology.
“Leaders who fail to invest in infrastructure, such as roads, energy, transportation systems and technology, perpetuate a sense of under-development and inferiority on their people,” he said.
The former NUC scribe said that focusing on infrastructure projects would also contribute to long-term development of the country.
He stated that huge investments in modern infrastructure would also show the world that Nigeria was progressing and able to provide its people without necessarily relying on external forces. (NAN)
