The Management of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, has called on non-governmental organizations to partner with Universities to advance education in Africa. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Adedayo Fasakin who addressed a team from
Computer Aid International, a United Kingdom based non-governmental organization with regional headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, expressed the need for partnership between educational institutions and local and international companies of relevance in the drive for equitable global development.
Professor Fasakin who received the Regional Programme Coordinator, Martha Gatheru on
behalf of the Vice-Chancellor noted that the world had long become a global village in which Information Communication Technology (ICT) and computers are inevitable. He urged the Computer Aid International to expand its scope and operations in Africa in order to position
the continent to achieve greater level of comprehensive development. He pledged the support of the University to the success of the partnership and encouraged the Computer Aid International to work with the University’s Computer Resource Centre in order to further concretize the partnership.
In her remark Martha Gatheru, the Regional Programme Coordinator of Computer Aid
International explained that the company’s aim is to bridge the digital divide between the rich and the poor so that there would be equal access to the many advantages of ICT all over the world.She stressed that the continent would be stagnated without ICT, hence, the company’s initiative of supplying refurbished computers to Universities and other institutions to bridge the affordability gap and encourage ICT compliance. Gatheru who noted that computers were
collected from big organizations like the queen’s palace and big businesses in the United Kingdom disclosed that the computers are cleared, tested, stocked and sent to Universities to assist the educational process. She expressed satisfaction with the level of
exposure to ICT in the University.
In another development The Federal University of Technology, Akure, has appointed three
Professors and promoted nine Senior Lecturers to the position of Readers. The Professors are; Dr. J. O. Olukunle of the Department of Agricultural Engineering, Dr. B. E. A. Boboye of Microbiology and Dr. M. O. Ashamo of Department of Biology. The Readers include; Dr. V. O.
Oyetayo of Microbiology, Dr. F. I. Alao of Mathematical Science, Dr. G. O. Omosuyi of Applied Geophysics, Dr. B. G. Ogunjemite of Ecotourism and Wildlife Management, Dr. E. O. Ogolo of Physics, Dr. P. G. Oguntunde of Agricultural Engineering, Dr. B. M. Olaleye of Mining Engineering, Dr. A. O. Owolabi of Civil Engineering and Dr. (Mrs) B. J. Akinyele of Microbiology.
