The Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, Omuso Abbey, has declared a state of emergency on flood on the island.

He has also given a two week ultimatum to owners of both permanent and temporary structures on drainage lines to, as a matter of urgency, remove them.

In a statement by the Special Assistant to the Chairman on Media and Publicity, Mr. Adolf Pepple, the LGA boss warned that failure to comply will attract immediate sanctions, stating that government will take every necessary action to safe guard the area from the visible threat of flooding.

Abbey sympathized with all those who may have suffered one form of loss or the other as a result of the flood crisis affecting the community in recent times.

Residents of the island have for a long while been subjected to the untold suffering due to the severe flooding experienced in the area. Investigations show that indiscriminate dumping of refuse on drainages and siting building structures on the drainages thus blocking the free flow of water.

Properties worth millions of naira have been lost to the flood over the years making life unbearable for the residents of the community.

In a bid to curb this menace, Omuso Abbey set up a taskforce to commence immediate evacuation of refuse and disilting of drainages across the community. The people of the area have commended the Chairman for this people oriented initiative, noting that it has started yielding positive results so far.

The LGA boss is appealing to everyone in the community to cooperate with government to alleviate the suffering of the people by cleaning their environment, stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse and clearing the drainages to allow seamless evacuation of water into water bodies across the community.
