Bala FCT MinisterIn its efforts to curtail any case of building collapse in the Federal Capital Territory, the FCT Development Control as a routine, has officially reported a structural engineer (not a Staff of FCTA) to the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), which has earned the Engineer one-year suspension.
The FCT Minister, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, CON, made this disclosure on Monday during the FCT Operations Briefing Session in Gwarinpa I District (Life-Camp), Abuja.
The meeting was attended by the FCT Police Commissioner, representative of the Commandant of Brigade of Guards, Mandate Secretaries, Commandants of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) respectively, representatives of the Directorate of State Security Services and NDLEA respectively, the FCT Comptroller of Prisons as well as the Directors of the FCT Operational Departments.
The Minister reiterated that henceforth any professional found wanting would promptly be reported to their professional bodies, as FCT Administration is not ready to compromise the life of any resident of the Territory.
Senator Mohammed warned professionals doing business with the FCT Administration to sit up as the era of quackery is over; stressing that his Administration would not hesitate to blacklist any erring professional.
He insisted that the FCT Administration has the responsibility of securing the lives and property of all the residents of the Territory and would not do less.
The Minister emphasized that as a responsible Administration, anything that would negatively affect the lives of the residents of the Territory would be fought to a stand still.
Senator Mohammed remarked that the disciplinary action taken by COREN would surely serve as a deterrent because the FCT Administration is fervently fighting to completely stop any case of building collapse in and around the 8,000 square kilometers of the Territory.
He commended COREN for their decisiveness in handling reported cases of professional misconduct among its registered members.
The Minister thus, called on other professionals in the construction industry such as Town Planners’ Registration Council (TOPREC) and Architects’ Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) to follow suite in their collaborative work with the FCT to engender orderly and safe development in the Territory.
According to him, the FCT Development Control Department has removed 27 shanties on Plots 1367 and 233, Central Business District, Abuja between September 12th – November 18th, 2014.
“The FCT Administration during the same period sealed Plot 988 Cadastral Zone A05 Maitama for contravening land use,” he added.
